2019 Study Abroad Grant Recipient

This year, a junior at Michigan State University, Layla Brooks, was selected as a recipient of the 2019 Study Abroad Grant. She is using the funds to study abroad in Malawi where she will work at an NGO, Center for Civil Society.

During her time working at Center for Civil Society, Brooks will focus on the 50:50 campaign, a government campaign that pushes for an equal number of women in Malawian government. Because of the funds from this scholarship, Brooks has achieved her dream of being able to travel to the African continent.

Brooks is pursuing her bachelor’s degree in political science with two minors in African studies and Women & Gender studies. After she completes her undergraduate studies, she hopes to continue on to pursue a PhD to expand on her studies of African politics.
